On June 9, Reus experienced another historic milestone within the celebration of the Gaudí Year with the inauguration of a new sculpture dedicated to Antoni Gaudí, located in Fossar Vell, at the foot of the bell tower of the Prioral Church of Sant Pere. At Miró Vermouth, we are especially proud to have contributed to making this project a reality, reinforcing the cultural, historical and identity heritage of our city.
The new artwork, promoted by the Amics de Gaudí de Reus Association and created by sculptor Joan Serramià, pays tribute to one of the most universal figures born in Reus. The sculpture depicts Antoni Gaudí working as an architect while modelling the façade of the Sanctuary of Misericòrdia in plaster, a scene that reflects the way architects of his time used to work.
The bronze figure, standing 1.9 metres tall, is complemented by a stone base inspired by the distinctive clouds that decorate the Nativity Façade of the Sagrada Família. The artwork includes numerous symbolic details, such as a bench designed by Gaudí himself, his characteristic hat, hazelnuts and a rosary. The hazelnuts, deeply rooted in the local territory, reinforce the connection between Gaudí and the Reus region where he grew up.
The chosen location is also highly significant. The sculpture has been installed at the foot of the bell tower of Sant Pere, a place closely linked to Gaudí’s life, as he was baptised in this church and found inspiration in its stairways for future projects such as the towers of the Sagrada Família.
For Miró Vermouth, being part of this initiative is yet another demonstration of our commitment to promoting the culture, history and heritage of Reus. This collaboration joins another of the major Gaudí Year projects in which we have also participated: the large mural dedicated to Antoni Gaudí recently unveiled next to Reus Central Market, an artwork that has helped transform the urban landscape and further highlight the architect’s legacy.
Over the past months, the Gaudí Year has been turning Reus into a major showcase for promoting and celebrating his legacy. At Miró Vermouth, we are delighted to take part in initiatives that project the city, its history and its values far beyond our borders.
We will continue supporting projects that help preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Reus, a city with which we share our origins, identity and pride of belonging.
